The First Woman To Have Sex w/ Her Own Kidney

We've all heard about the urban legend where a person wakes up in a hotel bathtub with a scar across the abdomen, one kidney lighter.

However, a new surgical procedure could make donating a kidney nearly scar-free - at least for women. For the first time, doctors extracted a kidney out of a patient's vagina for the purpose of organ donation.

A 48-year-old woman donated the organ to her niece.

Doctors have previously extracted cancerous kidneys using a similar technique, as well as appendixes and gall bladders.

Doctors at Johns Hopkins University Medical School performed the operation using two wands inserted through small incisions in the patient's abdomen. They tracked their movements with a video camera inserted through her navel.

Meanwhile, the surgeons cut an incision into her vaginal wall and put in a small plastic bag to hold the newly freed kidney. A string attached to the bag allowed them to pull the bag and kidney out of her vagina.

Though this may sound more invasive than extracting a kidney the traditional way, lead surgeon Robert Montgomery says the procedure could encourage more women to donate their kidneys.

Natural orifice surgeries are "the final frontier to explore in making surgery scarless, less painful and, for obese patients, much safer," said colleague Anthony Kalloo in a press release. "An organ donor, in particular, is most deserving of a scar-free, minimally invasive and pain-free procedure."

  3. WOW! I thinking about becoming a living donor for my Dad. I was doing research on the scar and found this site. Not willing to try this option. My main concern is losing sensitivity and if the procedure would stretch the vagina out. I'd rather have a scar! How about through the abdomen, then performing a tummy tuck? Then the scar, skin and belly fat is gone and then everyone's happy.
